Human–Animal Interactions in Disaster Settings: A Systematic Review

Abstract This systematic review aimed to assess the current knowledge of human–animal interactions (HAIs) in disaster settings and identify areas for future research. A Preferred Reporting Items Systematic Reviews Meta-Analyses search was conducted on three multidisciplinary databases, identifying English-language journal articles published between January 2000 February 2022 that explored benefits challenges associated with HAI disasters emergencies. The analyzed 94 using both quantitative qualitative methods. found a paucity universal terminology describe bidirectional relationship humans animals during failure include all animal types every stage emergency management. Additionally, research predominantly focused health well-being rather than animals. Efforts promote social environmental justice their co-inhabitants should support welfare settings. Four recommendations were developed based these findings increase inclusion research, policy, practice. Limitations included exclusion pre-2000 grey literature, limited examining different combinations types, outside North America.
